Nightwing

Leaping about with the city of Bludhaven behind him, Nightwing is on the lookout for criminals great and small! This piece was a lot of fun to do. I drew this for PencilJack.com‘s annual “Christmas Art Swap.” I was very pleased with how this turned out. I haven’t read a Nightwing book since the late ’90s, but I’ve drawn Nightwing many, many times for DC Comics and in commissions and convention sketches. I think this is my favorite drawing of him that I’ve done over the years. Hang on to it, DDeal12!

Father’s Day

FATHER’S DAY is the latest horror flick from TROMA STUDIOS (the people who brought us TOXIC AVENGER). When the director of the film commissioned me to draw an image featuring the lead characters from the movie, I was happy to oblige. He was kind enough to help me with reference materials, and I set out to do a nice collage image. I particularly liked drawing the girl. That’s me in a nutshell. An artist who enjoys drawing cute babes and horrible monsters. It’s no wonder that my favorite movie is the original 1933 KING KONG!

Cup Cake Assassin

This was an unusual commission. It was for someone in Malaysia who wanted to present the image as a gift–a digital background for her friend’s computer. The idea here is that a female assassin has slain another lady via a poison kiss, stealing her giant cupcake! Out on the balcony, the assassin wields her sugar-sweet prize, and we are able to see the body of the victim on the penthouse floor behind her. This one was quite a challenge to do, but it was fun to work in the Batman animated style again, and I enjoyed playing around with textures and color. I had a lot of fun drawing the mesh on the assassin’s costume too!

Zatanna Commission

This was a commission of one of my favorite DC characters! Zatanna (“Zee” to her friends) is just updating her facebook status with a little help from her magic spell. Who needs typing when you can wave a wand and say stuff backwards? LOL.

Suicide Squad Commission 2

This is another SUICIDE SQUAD cover done for collector, Bill Cox. It features the Squad about to have a showdown with Gorosaurus. The Squad is flying via Bell Rocket Belts, while Gorosaurus is wrecking the Arc De Triomphe in Paris. Paris has sure taken a beating in these last two commissions! This piece was drawn on 11″X17″ bristol, and inked with a Raphael Kolinsky brush. The title and other lettering is also done by hand.

Suicide Squad Cover–Now in Color!

Steve Downer, the colorist on “LORNA: RELIC WRANGLER,” delivers a fantastic job on my Suicide Squad commission. I thought you all would enjoy checking it out first-hand.

Great job, Steve!

On a personal note…

Some of you may have already seen the Groovy Agent’s post at Diversions of the Groovy Kind about my wife Carolyn, so she and I decided we should also make an official announcement here.

To use Carolyn’s words, she has “a little bit of breast cancer.” It was caught very early due to an annual mammogram. Her surgeon told her it would have been three to five years before the tumor got large enough to be felt in a self-exam, by which point the cancer could have spread to other parts of her body. So go mammograms!

She is in very good spirits, thanks to a ton of support she’s received from all quarters–friends, family, co-workers, and fans. She will have a lumpectomy in early August, followed by a month of radiation in September. If all goes well, she should be cancer-free and feeling great in time for Halloween. And, in true comic-book style, she’s sincerely hoping the radiation will interact with all the prayers flying around her and turn her into a super-heroine.

Thank you all for your support during this time. You are the best!

Colossus versus Juggernaut

This illustration was commissioned by Travis Ellisor, a super-nice guy and art collector.

The drawing features the awesome might of Colossus, one of my favorite X-Men, battling the “unstoppable” Juggernaut. In a toe-to-toe fight, Juggernaut would probably get the best of our boy Pete, but he would still give Juggy a run for his money and, under the right circumstances, Pete would clean his clock! And that is just what our brawny X-Man is doing here!

Better luck next time, Marko!

Suicide Squad Cover

The Suicide Squad, featuring Rick Flag, Jr.;  his girlfriend Karin Grace; Dr. Hugh Evans; and Jess Bright, first appeared in “The Brave and the Bold” in the 1959. The Squad, also known as “Task Force X,” often found themselves pitted against giant aliens, monsters, and creatures. When Bill Cox commissioned me to create a Suicide Squad cover illustration, he requested that the team be fighting a giant snake in Paris.

I had a blast drawing the dramatic bird’s eye view of the Eiffel Tower and showing the team using the infamous Hiller Flying Platforms from the 1950s. I’ve always been a fan of drawing giant monsters, so of course I loved drawing the snake coiled around the Tower.

This is one of my favorite commissions to date. And now, thanks to Bill, I’ve become a fan of the original Suicide Squad myself!

Incredible Hulk

I did this black and white illustration of the Incredible Hulk for my good friend Steve Funnell, AKA BrokenHill. Steve is an illustrator who also creates metal sculptures. You can check out his work at http://brokenhill.deviantart.com.

Steve is a big fan of the classic Marvel characters, so I wanted to give his Hulk drawing a look that harkened back to the original Jack Kirby version.  It was a lot of fun to draw ol’ Green Skin tramping through the wilds of New Mexico.

Once I finished the black and white, Steve Downer provided some gorgeous digital colors. See B&W ink and color versions below.
