The Suicide Squad, featuring Rick Flag, Jr.; his girlfriend Karin Grace; Dr. Hugh Evans; and Jess Bright, first appeared in “The Brave and the Bold” in the 1959. The Squad, also known as “Task Force X,” often found themselves pitted against giant aliens, monsters, and creatures. When Bill Cox commissioned me to create a Suicide Squad cover illustration, he requested that the team be fighting a giant snake in Paris.
I had a blast drawing the dramatic bird’s eye view of the Eiffel Tower and showing the team using the infamous Hiller Flying Platforms from the 1950s. I’ve always been a fan of drawing giant monsters, so of course I loved drawing the snake coiled around the Tower.
This is one of my favorite commissions to date. And now, thanks to Bill, I’ve become a fan of the original Suicide Squad myself!
