On a personal note…

Some of you may have already seen the Groovy Agent’s post at Diversions of the Groovy Kind about my wife Carolyn, so she and I decided we should also make an official announcement here.

To use Carolyn’s words, she has “a little bit of breast cancer.” It was caught very early due to an annual mammogram. Her surgeon told her it would have been three to five years before the tumor got large enough to be felt in a self-exam, by which point the cancer could have spread to other parts of her body. So go mammograms!

She is in very good spirits, thanks to a ton of support she’s received from all quarters–friends, family, co-workers, and fans. She will have a lumpectomy in early August, followed by a month of radiation in September. If all goes well, she should be cancer-free and feeling great in time for Halloween. And, in true comic-book style, she’s sincerely hoping the radiation will interact with all the prayers flying around her and turn her into a super-heroine.

Thank you all for your support during this time. You are the best!

Colossus versus Juggernaut

This illustration was commissioned by Travis Ellisor, a super-nice guy and art collector.

The drawing features the awesome might of Colossus, one of my favorite X-Men, battling the “unstoppable” Juggernaut. In a toe-to-toe fight, Juggernaut would probably get the best of our boy Pete, but he would still give Juggy a run for his money and, under the right circumstances, Pete would clean his clock! And that is just what our brawny X-Man is doing here!

Better luck next time, Marko!

Suicide Squad Cover

The Suicide Squad, featuring Rick Flag, Jr.;  his girlfriend Karin Grace; Dr. Hugh Evans; and Jess Bright, first appeared in “The Brave and the Bold” in the 1959. The Squad, also known as “Task Force X,” often found themselves pitted against giant aliens, monsters, and creatures. When Bill Cox commissioned me to create a Suicide Squad cover illustration, he requested that the team be fighting a giant snake in Paris.

I had a blast drawing the dramatic bird’s eye view of the Eiffel Tower and showing the team using the infamous Hiller Flying Platforms from the 1950s. I’ve always been a fan of drawing giant monsters, so of course I loved drawing the snake coiled around the Tower.

This is one of my favorite commissions to date. And now, thanks to Bill, I’ve become a fan of the original Suicide Squad myself!

Incredible Hulk

I did this black and white illustration of the Incredible Hulk for my good friend Steve Funnell, AKA BrokenHill. Steve is an illustrator who also creates metal sculptures. You can check out his work at http://brokenhill.deviantart.com.

Steve is a big fan of the classic Marvel characters, so I wanted to give his Hulk drawing a look that harkened back to the original Jack Kirby version.  It was a lot of fun to draw ol’ Green Skin tramping through the wilds of New Mexico.

Once I finished the black and white, Steve Downer provided some gorgeous digital colors. See B&W ink and color versions below.
